“This was a great day. A new brother, beating Brian at miniature golf, and now ice cream. Thank you, Mr. Wiley,” Brady said hours later, as they sat in Cindy’s Sweet Shoppe.

“You can call me Uncle Eric.”

“Are you our uncle?” four-year-old Burke asked, licking cookies and cream before a dribble landed on his pant leg.

“Not yet,” Eric answered, “but maybe someday.”

“Burke, don’t be such a nerd. They’d have to be married for him to be our uncle,” Brian declared.

“Adding aunt or uncle in front of a name is a polite way to address an adult,” Kate defended. “Eric is showing good manners by not making you call him Mr. Wiley.”

“He didn’t mean anything by it, Kate,” Eric said. “He’s just curious. Fearsome, you might say.”

“No, I’d say fantastic.”

“What are you two talking about?” Brady asked.

“Nothing.” Kate winked at Eric. “Finish your ice cream. Your folks should be home by now.”

Eric patted Brady’s shoulder. “I agree with you. This has been a great day. If your aunt will let us, maybe we can do this again.”

“Can we Aunt Kate? Can we?” the boys chimed in unison.

“Well, I don’t see why not.”

“Tomorrow? Can we do something tomorrow?” Burke asked.

Eric turned to Kate. “I’m available. Are you?”
